Making Sure Your Wedding Cake Fits Your Style

Five sources of inspiration for choosing the perfect wedding cake by Rachel Barnard.

Congratulations! You are engaged! And as a busy bride or groom to be you have a lot of planning ahead of you. Although finding the perfect wedding cake is just one item on your long to-do list, the wedding cake really has a lot of expectations tied to it.  As the centerpiece for the entire wedding reception, the wedding cake needs to fit with the décor of the wedding (your theme), be durable enough to last the whole evening, be large enough to feed all of your guests, and, of course, taste good as well.

Really, your wedding cake will be the ultimate finishing touch to your special day. So as you start your hunt for the perfect wedding cake—by sampling cakes at tastings, deciding on a wedding cake design that will compliment your dress, your décor, and your wedding theme—consider the following five tips to ensure your wedding cake fits the wedding style you’re going for…

1. Look at your wedding theme for inspiration

When choosing a cake to top off your perfect evening, you’ll want a cake that is remembered as well as one that matches the style of your wedding. For instance, I choose a classy black and white classic Hollywood theme for my Henri’s mermaid style wedding gown and décor so I didn’t want a huge butter cream, pink pouf for a cake. If you’re confused or unsettled on a wedding theme, start by creating a mood board to give you a perspective. Simply use a bulletin board or large piece of cardboard and stick pictures and words that you’re drawn to on it for inspiration. These will help you to focus on one main theme, and ensure all aspects (i.e., wedding gown, bridesmaid’s gowns, groom’s suits, table settings, décor, flowers, and cake) fits with the rest of the theme. For instance, I used my invitation styles and table decorations to guide my cake inspiration.

2. Choosing a wedding cake topper

As the center piece of your reception, the most impact your wedding cake can make is thanks to the cake topper itself. Cake toppers can range from fresh flowers to a plastic bride. However, before you choose one willy-nilly, remember that this is the part that will remain long after the cake itself has been eaten, and it’s also the part that everyone will admire throughout the evening.

3. Seek inspiration online

When choosing my wedding cake, I turned to handmade websites like Etsy and bakery galleries for inspiration where I found literally thousands of cakes and toppers from individual artists who were willing to make me one (even a customized piece) per request. You can also use unconventional items—such as a memorable trinket from your first date, flower corsages, a vintage brooch, or a photograph to top your cake.

4. Cake sizing

Now this is important if you expect to treat all of your guests to a slice. If so, consider the setting and the size of the room, as well as the number of guests, and make sure the cake is proportional to it. Also consider the height of the bride and groom. For instance, if the bride is wearing heels, you might consider a tiered cake or a cake on a pedestal stand to add height.

5. Cake tasting

And last, but definitely not least, the flavor of the cake is in my opinion, the most important when serving it to wedding guests. That means the beauty of your wedding cake should run further than skin deep. If serving to a large room, choose a flavor that suits a large audience (i.e., vanilla cream, hazelnut, chocolate) and stay away from the more individual tastes (i.e., carrot cake or cakes containing common allergens like nuts).

If your wedding has a definite theme, try to use a cake topper that complements this same theme. For example, a western style cake topper would most likely look very out of place in a Victorian style wedding.
